One million kids in unsatisfactory schools!
Man, you don’t get a better headline than that - and how the press played it!
This John Dunford guy from ACSL is on the ball though. He gets asked for a lot of comments and he has a genuine educational head on his shoulders in my view.
In fact if Education Secretary wasn’t a political appointment requiring a sitting MP to be it, I might well have suggested that Tony hand it over to Dunford.
Maybe though he wouldn’t have wanted it, it is after all, a bit of a poisoned chalice isn’t it?
Back to the headline – how do you men and women at the chalkface feel about that one?
Bet it made your day didn’t it?
Bet it made you feel personally valued?
Bet it made you feel sick!
If I’d still been working at the ‘face it would have made me feel sick – not least because of the fact that kids and parents pick up on these sort of headlines. Some of them do so out of a sense of mischief, but most pick up out of a real, genuine sense of concern. You find yourself fielding questions like “Is our school unsatisfactory Miss?” “Am I one of the million Sir?”
Nobody, of course, would give a toss if the headline read “One million kids in satisfactory (or better) schools” would they?
Luv your job?
Course you do!
